Bartenders Will Take Everyone's Job in 2020!

Apr 29, 2020

Most of you do not have the skills needed to be hired at any company let alone the big boys. Some of the Biggest tech companies like google, amazon, and apple are growing at neck breaking paces. Great news for some of you however, they are all looking for something specific and you probably do not have it.

As technology progresses, the most exciting fields are expanding the fastest. Machine learning, A.I. Algorithms, BioTech, as well as Finance and Cyber Security to name a few, are all areas where there will be enormous opportunities to build a long and lasting careers.

This pace has been further accelerated by the current state of the corporate landscape due more people having to work from home and find solutions for doing so. It would seem that people would be losing their jobs in the midst of this raging pandemic. In fact, tech companies have more work to do than ever to keep up with the rapid innovation as well as the need for infrastructure construction. The catch is that most of these jobs will be filled by… well, themselves. Machine Learning, and A.I. will take care of most of the work cheaper, better, faster, than any of you.

It is a hard fact but a natural one. The same can be said for the people working in automotive factories, video rental stores, and record labels. But machines and A.I. can’t do everything… There is  a skill some humans have that is both increasing in value while simultaneously increasing in rarity in people 30 and younger, especially us Introverts. That skill is communication.

In 2017, software giant CEO Tim Cook set out to hire a new Vice President of Retail. A job that would have made any skilled professional’s career let alone the people already working at Apple that may have been eyeing that position. As the applications poured in, the number of highly skilled, well qualified candidates were in abundant supply. Much like a lot of us who are focused on being the best at what we do, soft skills and improving our ability to communicate are not things often practiced and honed.

Cook hired Angela Ahrendts in May of 2017. She was the CEO of Burberry and was responsible for structuring and launching the brand’s online retail store. Under her leadership, the brand saw exponential growth. She is an incredible leader but, with all of the talent in Silicon Valley why hire from outside of the industry?

It was because of her ability to communicate. Her ability to convey clear and effective instructions on how to execute her strategies and her ability to inspire people to act and create. When Cook offered Ahrendts the position she told him “Tim, I’m not a techie. You have the wrong person”. Cook however, did not hire Ahrendts for her technical abilities. “We have people for that.” He told her. That was 2017. In 2020 and beyond, he will be saying…”We have algorithms for that". And Cook isn’t alone in his hiring and recruitment philosophies.

4 out of 5 CEOs on the Forbes: The Worlds Most Innovative Companies list value strong communication over any other attribute. They are looking for leaders. People that not only have creative ideas and the technical chops to manifest them, but can also communicate this ideas in an inspiring way. What does this mean? This means that a bartender is going to take your job. A barista is going to take your job. A actor or comedian is going to take your job. Their experience with the general public and their ability to communicate productively in a charming and artistic way are the skills that is in needed in 2020 and beyond. The purpose of the Blog is to inform. Communication is a skill and just like the rest of your skills, it can be improved and honed.

To improve your own skills, start reading books on human nature. And practice. As an introverted bartender I found reading Robert Greene’s: “The Laws of Human Nature”, “The 48 Laws of Power”, and “The Art of Seduction” immensely helpful as I learned to engage with strangers and make connections. These three books along with having over 100,000 conversations really made connecting with people much easier and made me a lot more money.

If you want to get a quick start, I have included a free PDF with my system for meeting new people, which you can find below. Its called: How to Start Conversations With Anyone in 2020 and details  my process for making a powerful and positive first impression when I need to be charming and make money. But to wrap it up, invest in your Communication skills to help future proof yourself. Whether you watch YouTube or Read Books or even buy an Online Course the investment will pay dividends.
